Cristian has over ten years of experience developing therapeutic ultrasound devices and microelectronic products. Since 2006, he was closely involved in the development of the ultrasonic dental technology at the University of Alberta, where he was the liaison between the medical and electrical engineering teams on the design, testing and biological validation of the technology concept. Cristian’s passion to commercialize and bring this technology to the hands of dentists and patients led him to launch SmileSonica in 2008 and devote full-time to the company. Since 2008, Cristian has built and led an entrepreneurial team of engineers, scientists, and business people at SmileSonica. This team has advanced the ultrasonic dental technology from the concept stage to a commercially ready product manufactured in Canada. The product was evaluated in clinics across Canada for the past two years. The product is expected to become available on the Canadian market within one year.

Dr. Eric Flaim, PhD, PChem

Over the last 7 years, Eric has led the University of Alberta Micromachining and Nanofabrication Facility (nanoFAB) through a $50M expansion in new infrastructure, equipment and staff in supporting the research, development and commercialization needs of Alberta based academics and companies within the micro and nano technology sector. With a focus on device fabrication and materials characterization the nanoFAB represents the largest open access, academic based research and development facility for emerging micro and nano technology developments. As the Director of the nanoFAB, Eric ensures that the strategic direction and growth of the nanoFAB continuously supports and fosters a wider growth in the development of a micro/nano technology based industry within Edmonton and Alberta.

Eric is also the Director of nanoBridge, a $9M early stage commercialization funding initiative targeting the development and commercialization of micro and nano technology emerging from late stage academic research, or early stage R&D within companies.  Eric also developed an Entrepreneurship funding program within nanoBridge for the direct financial support of recent graduates in pursuing their technology development ideas.  Of 4 entrepreneurship projects funded, 2 are still active with product releases and positive revenue.

Through both these roles Eric looks to support innovators within the micro and nano technology field, in driving higher value towards a diversified Alberta economy.
