Nicola is currently working for BioAlberta managing relationships with the members and partners at BioAlberta. BioAlberta is the central voice and organizing hub for the life sciences industry in Alberta. It is a private, not-for-profit industry association representing the growing sector. Our vision is for a thriving and globally competitive Life Sciences industry that fuels key sectors of Alberta’s economy. BioAlberta activities are focused in three key strategic areas: Advocacy, Promotion, Marketing & Networking and Industry Development.

 

Nicola has previously received a Master’s in Science (’07) and a Master’s in Business Administration (’14) at the UofA. Her MSc was in virology and neuropathology with Dr. Chris Power at the UofA. Nicola then went on to work with Dr. Lorne Tyrrell as a research technician, working on HCV. During this time she acquired her MBA, specializing in Technology Commercialization. With this combined skillset, she has worked on a number of life science related projects for technology development and commercialization, while also passing on recommendations and connections for further development to the BioAlberta member companies.

Don is the Director of Health Technology Assessment and Innovation at Alberta Health Services.  Don leads a team to situate AHS at the forefront in the use of evidence to inform health care decisions and policy with a particular emphasis on innovating and transforming the Alberta health care system to achieve improved patient outcomes.  

                                                                                        

He is a member of the Alberta Advisory Committee on Health Technologies that assists the government in the review of health technologies and services.  Dr. Juzwishin was CEO of the Health Council of Canada reporting on the progress of health care reform in Canada.   Don serves on the CCHL Ethics Council and on the Editorial Board of Canadian Healthcare Management.  Don has extensive experience in leadership with health authorities as well as government, private sector, and universities

Raised in rural Ontario, John Paul moved to Alberta in 2004 to pursue a PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Alberta. Following graduation and a two-year term as a Post-Doc, John Paul accepted a position with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in the Government of Alberta. In his current position, John Paul coordinates funding for government research scientists to support proof-of-concept research and knowledge extension activities. The ability to draw on experiences in academic research has been a strong asset for navigating the inner workings of research in the public sector. The transition from academia to public service has been filled with many surprises, challenges, and rewards.

Don has a very broad background stemming from his work as a Producer, writer and host, both as a freelancer and for the CBC. In addition to the many productions he has been involved in (film, radio, television), Don is engaged in research with the Behavioural Neuroscience Laboratory at Laurentian University examining the effect of electromagnetic fields and psychoacoustics on the human brain and cognition.
